Thinking of ditching your laptop? The European launch of the new OQO model e2, is the latest ‘ultra mobile PC’ (UMPC) to hit the market.

And at 26 millimeters thick and weighing only 454 grams, its mobility isn’t in question. But is that enough to warrant the $1700 price tag?

Martin Day, director of international channels for OQO, seemed confident that it does:

"The key benefits of an ultra mobile PC are increased productivity. It runs Windows, so no application porting is required.

“Because of this, there's no user training necessary, and no special IT support tools needed either."

Indeed, full Windows compatibility seems to be the key selling point. This, along with a great 5-inch screen and EVDO wireless Internet makes the OQO much easier to use than rivals such as Sony’s Vaio.

The OQO e2 is essentially the same as its US counterpart, the O2. The only significant changes are a UK keyboard (thankfully!) and some tweaks to its software.

The product has been a success in America, and Dennis Moore, CEO of OQO, feels that Europe can become just as profitable for the company.

"The opening of our new office in England and the launch of our first international product demonstrates OQO's commitment to meeting the needs of our international customers.

“We're excited to be partnering with several international resellers to bring the OQO model e2 to the European market."
